Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck | Kahuku, HI

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck

we driving to north shore and decided to give giovanni’s shrimp truck a try. why? because thousands (literally thousands) of people online told us to. we will disclose that we are normally not fans of food trucks in general (in los angeles) but we wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck

simple menu. you have three options: scampi, hot spicy, lemon & butter. we ordered the shrimp scampi (their most popular). garlic shrimp over white rice and a side of macaroni salad.

  • food: we wanted to love this place! while the shrimp shell was definitely garlicy, the shrimp itself had no flavor. meh.
  • ambience: welp. it’s a truck. expect picnic tables and lots of people.
  • overall: i think a lot of people are drawn to this truck because you can smell the garlic from a mile away! this is a nice truck off the beaten path. however, i wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here. also, if you have a date later, cancel. your breath is not going to be the same for at least 24 hours. please refer to the mounds of garlic on top of the rice in the photos above for reference.

  • food: ugh. we love musubi. we enjoyed snacking here and definitely recommend it.
  • service: so friendly. considering how many people come here, the place is super efficient despite the extensive menu.
  • ambience: hole in the wall status. expect to grab and go.

Scarpetta | Las Vegas, NV

Scarpetta Las Vegas

a little note: life has gotten hectic in 2015 so i have not had a chance to post anything this year. (i know. i’m disappointed in myself) recently, i got an awesome note from a fellow reader urging me to come back to the blogging world. how can i say no? so this post is long, long overdue. better late than never? here we go!

we made a last minute trip to vegas for our anniversary and ended up at scarpetta for an early dinner (no res) before watching celine dion (my childhood idol. yes, i cried a little when she first came out on stage).

here is what we ordered:

  • heirloom tomato salad, mozzarella & grilled ciabatta
  • pici pasta (lobster, tarragon, almond & chili pesto)
  • duck foie gras ravioli
  • diver scallops

Scarpetta Las Vegas Scarpetta Las Vegas

heirloom tomato salad on point. cheese melts in your mouth. i would highly recommend getting this.

the scallops (below) were okay. i wasn’t blown away by them.

Scarpetta Las Vegas Scarpetta Las Vegas

now the pasta. the real mvp. we ordered the lobster pasta (above) and the duck ravioli (below). both were uh-mazing. i repeat. uh-mazing.

pastas were fresh and cooked perfectly al dente. flavors were phenomenal. i wish we had time to order more of their pasta dishes!

Scarpetta Las Vegas Scarpetta Las Vegas

the restaurant was nice enough to help us celebrate anniversary. dessert was a great end.

Scarpetta Las Vegas

  • food: amazing food and beautiful presentation. scarpetta is now one of our favorite italian restaurants! (we fancy) i can’t wait to try everything on their menu.
  • service: very attentive and efficient. this is the kind of service where if you drop a breadcrumb, someone is running to clean it up for you…while filling up your water glass. #skillz
  • ambience: beautiful unassuming spot. we didn’t even know this restaurant existed in the cosmo until we started exploring. great for special occasions. hopefully you get to sit near the window!
  • overall: we came here not expecting much and were blown away with the food. yes, price point is high. $25-40 for a pasta… however, an un-regrettable splurge for a special occasion, in our opinion. see you soon, scarpetta.

Ink.Sack | West Hollywood, CA

Ink Sack West Hollywood

annnnnnnd i’m back! after a few months on hiatus, the blog is back in action. first post: ink.sack.

so many of our friends love, love ink.sack sandwiches. we had to try it for ourselves! as recommended by the cashier, we ordered:

  • cold fried chicken sandwich
  • banh mi sandwich – pork shoulder, bacon, chicharrónes, pickled vegetables, onion spread
  • pork rinds (yep, you read that right. we got them rinds)

i will start by saying these sandwiches are on the small side but very reasonably priced. they run about $6 each. perfect size for me. for some, one might not be enough.

Ink Sack West Hollywood

the rinds were okay. actually a little soggy and lacked the crispiness we were expecting (bummer). i honestly dont know why we got the rinds. lol. we never get rinds. our bad.

Ink Sack West Hollywood

the cold fried chicken sandwich was good! i know i should’ve expected the fried chicken to be cold because of the name… but i was still surprised by the temperature first bite in. still, very good! good flavor and good bread.

Ink Sack West Hollywood

the banh mi was our favorite of the two. even more flavor than the fried chicken. there is a lot going on but in a good way.

  • food: sandwiches lived up to their hype. i want to try every sandwich on the menu now! i would pass on the rinds.
  • service: this is not a full service place (if you want full service, go to ink next door). cashier was nice. food came out quickly.
  • parking: street parking… in west hollywood. good luck.
  • overall: we liked this place and would definitely go back to try the rest of the menu!

cheers!

Café Amelie | New Orleans, LA

Cafe Amelie New Orleans

cafe amelie wasn’t on our radar until we walked by the restaurant on our ghost and vampire walking tour. the shrimp and grits was what grabbed our attention. i had to try it.

we ordered:

  • jumbo lump crab cake ($15) – served with baby greens and citrus drizzle. they were not lying when they said “jumbo”. very good crab cake.
  • shrimp & grits ($13) – corn and andouille maque choux
  • skillet roasted duck breast ($29) – sweet potato hash, green beans, apricot pepper glaze

Cafe Amelie New Orleans

so the shrimp and grits were incredible and everything we wanted it to be! the shrimp had great flavor. the corn sauce… uh-mazing. everything together was just perfect. i wish i had a better photo for you but we came here late at night, right before it closed. sorry, folks!

Cafe Amelie New Orleans

the glazed duck was also amazing! great, sweet glaze. the duck was perfectly cooked.

  • food: this was one of our favorite meals in nola! everything was wonderful and we can’t rave about it more! so glad we were able to squeeze in a reservation on our last night!
  • service: everyone was so nice and attentive.
  • ambience: this place is stupid cute. great romantic spot. i wish we would’ve gone here for a lunch or early dinner so that we could have enjoyed the patio area (lit up by christmas lights at night).
  • overall: food was excellent, service was wonderful and the ambience was the cherry on top! moderate to expensive price range (make this one of the special meals). we highly recommend cafe amelie if you are in town and looking great food.
